Description

Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Ben Ali Gator Maquette (Walt Disney, 1940). This exceptionally rare piece is an original animator's maquette used in the production of the 1940 Walt Disney feature film Fantasia. It depicts Ben Ali Gator, the leader of the alligators in the "Dance of the Hours" segment of Fantasia. Maquettes like this one are used to help animators visualize a character in three dimensions, from all angles, so that they can more accurate represent the design and perspective of the character. Ben Ali Gator and his accomplices represent the night in the segment, and he tries to win over Hyacinth Hippo's affections. The maquette is cast in plaster, and it depicts the alligator with his blue and red cloak, as well as his feather-topped hat, as he dances. The piece measures about 5.25" tall, with a base diameter of about 3.5". The piece is labeled on its base as #2, as well as bearing a stamp that reads "Return to Character Model Dept." This excellent maquette was repainted by Helen Nerbovig McIntosh, the lead of the maquette painting team at the time that Fantasia was produced. She has signed the base of the piece. The maquette is in Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear, as well as a professionally-repaired crack in the feather on the hat.
From the Disney Character Model Maquette Glad Collection.
