Description
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit RARE Vintage Publicity Art by Norm Blackburn (Walt Disney, 1927). This 1927 publicity drawing by Norm Blackburn is a prized piece of animation history, capturing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of the earliest characters created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Developed for Universal Pictures, Oswald starred in the 1927 short film Trolley Troubles and quickly became known for his distinctive ability to disassemble and reshape his body parts-a novel feature at the time. This ability not only showcased innovative animation techniques but also epitomized the concept of "personality animation," where cartoon characters exhibited recognizable emotions. Oswald was portrayed as haughty, feisty, and often overzealous, leading to humorous escapades that highlighted his characteristic luck. The drawing, by Disney animator Norm Blackburn, portrays a larger-than-life Oswald on a movie set, capturing the essence of his dynamic personality. In the background, Julius the Cat, another animated character of the era, can be seen lugging a piano, adding to the whimsical and chaotic environment typical of early animations. Norm Blackburn's involvement in this piece is particularly noteworthy. Beginning his animation career during a pivotal transition from silent films to sound, Blackburn joined Disney in the 1920s. His contributions were crucial during a period of experimentation and development at Disney Studios. He worked on projects such as the Silly Symphony series and early Mickey Mouse cartoons, helping to refine both the animation process and the art of storytelling within the medium. This publicity drawing, featured in the Taschen book "Walt Disney Film the Animated Movies 1921-1968" on page 24 and exhibited at the 2009 San Francisco Silent Film Festival, is a rare artifact from the formative years of animation. The book is not included in the lot. The drawing measures 11" x 9", mounted to a 12" x 10" board. Despite showing signs of light toning and surface wear, it remains in Good condition, making it a treasured collectible for enthusiasts of vintage animation art.Auction Info
