Description

Popeye the Sailor Popeye and Olive Oyl Production Cel Setup with Master Background, Group of 2 (Famous Studios, c. 1940s). "I Yam What I Yam." Here's a terrific pair of vintage Popeye the Sailor production cels with Master production backgrounds. One cel features Popeye, while the other depicts his sweetheart, Olive Oyl. Popeye made his film debut in Popeye the Sailor, a 1933 Betty Boop cartoon. Although Betty Boop has a small cameo appearance, the cartoon mostly introduces the main characters of the Popeye comic strip, with Popeye coming to rescue Olive Oyl after she is kidnapped by Bluto. The triangle between Popeye, Olive, and Bluto was set up from the beginning and soon became the template for most Popeye productions that would follow. These amazing (and super rare) 12 field production cels are both hand-inked and hand-painted. The Popeye cel is over a Master background from the 1949 cartoon Lumberjack and Jill. The background was painted by Tom Ford at Famous Studios. The Olive Oyl cel is over a hand-painted 12 field Master production background. The cels exhibit cracking and missing paint and could benefit from professional restoration. The Olive Oyl setup is matted to 14" x 11" with an aperture of 8.5" x 7.5". The setups are in Fair condition. Classic Popeye with a can of Spinach and Olive flexing her muscle!
