Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas Grinch and Max Production/Recreation Cel Setup (MGM, 1966/2001). "What a great Grinchy trick! With this coat, and this hat, I'll look just like St. Nick!" The Grinch grins ominously as he constructs his plan to steal Christmas from the Whos of Whoville: he will pose as Santa Claus so that he can sneak into the houses of Whoville and steal all the presents and decorations! In this key scene of the 1966 Chuck Jones-directed special based on the Dr. Seuss story of the same name, the Grinch uses his long-suffering pup Max as a model as he sews himself a Santa Claus suit. Max, holding a pincushion in his mouth, doesn't seem so sure about the Grinch's evil plan. This setup is composed of two original, hand-painted production cels from the 1966 Christmas special that depict the Grinch and Max, a moment which can be found at about the 8:14 mark of the special. Cels of the Grinch's feet and the stool upon which Max sits were re-created later to complete the image. The image of the Grinch measures about 5.5" x 5.75", and Max's image measures about 1.5" x 3". The Grinch's cel is signed by Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002), and the setup bears a Linda Jones Seal on its lower left corner. The cels are set atop a color print of the background from the scene. The piece comes with a Linda Jones Certificate of Authenticity. The piece is matted and framed with Plexiglas, with a matboard aperture of 11.5" x 9" and an overall frame size of 19.5" x 17". This spectacular image from an important moment in the beloved Christmas special is in Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear. The frame is sold as-is.
