Ramona Fradon Aquaman and Aqualad Specialty Piece Original Art (1996). Aquaman may have been a lesser presence within the DC Comics Pantheon, but with Fradon at the helm he asserted the status of a leading superhero. The women-in-comics pioneer cinches her claim to the franchise with this splendid seascape, depicting Aquaman and his sidekick astride two immense denizens of the ocean. Fradon's unusual technique is to emphasize the underlying pencil-strokes with fingertip-smudging, the better to achieve a shading-and-softening effect. Ink over graphite on Bristol board.
