Description

Paul Gregg Political Cartoon Original Art (Atlanta Journal, 1909). President Theodore Roosevelt's hand-picked successor, William Howard Taft, was seen as not having the verve or popular touch as Roosevelt. In an effort to solve the PR challenge, Republican handlers invented a "Billy Possum" icon to match Roosevelt's Teddy Bear. Despite the best efforts of cartoonists like Paul Gregg, it never took hold. Here is a significant example of a cartooning icon that didn't catch on. Measures 13" x 19". In Very Good condition.
