Mega Man 2 is the best selling installment in the Mega Man series with close to 1.5 million copies sold, yet it almost wasn't created. The sales from the original Mega Man game didn't cause Capcom to focus on a sequel to the game as a priority. However, the designers and creators of the series ended up working on this sequel as a side project. Mega Man 2''s box art was created by the talented illustrator, Marc Ericksen. Even though Mega Man's arm is a cannon, Ericksen and his art director interpreted the shooting actions of the 8-bit sprite to have been made by a pistol since they could not see a large gun in his hand, explaining the inclusion of the pistol in the artwork.
