Description
Ralph Lee When Good Fellows Get Together Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (Portland Oregonian, 1942). The independent French state of Vichy receives a backhanded thank-you for its allegiance to Nazi Germany, courtesy of pickpockets Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. The timing of Lee's sardonic commentary anticipates the murderous German takeover of Vichy. Lee, a prolific Oregonian editorialist, often razzed the Axis powers in such terms of embittered ridicule. The title (pencilled at upper margin) is an ironic reference to Richard Hovey's 19th-century poem, "A Stein Song" -- "For it's always good weather/When good fellows get together." (The phrase also was used by Mickey Mouse cartoonist Floyd Gottfredson as a theme for his villainous characters.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 11" x 15". Slight edge-toning and push-pin punctures. Excellent condition.More information about Ralph Lee. See also: Lee, Ralph Artist.
