Description

Henry Patrick Raleigh Harper's Bazaar Magazine Original Illustration (Hearst Corp., 1924). An emotion-drenched scene from Raleigh's heyday as a front-runner in the Golden Age of American Illustration. The artist had broken through to prominence a decade earlier with an assignment to illustrate H.G. Wells' Bealby for Collier's magazine. Raleigh's high-roller years would last into the 1930s, when changing tastes pronounced his work old-fashioned and out of popular favor. Such old-fashioned-ness is part of the greater charm, here, coupled with a progressive flair for wild flourishes of pencil-stroke Impressionism. Pure, layered graphite on textured illustration board, with red ink-wash highlights. Image area, 18" x 12". Moderate toning and light smudging, with marginal adhesive staining. Partially illegible (smudged) pencil-handwriting on reverse, accompanied by Harper's rubber-stamp imprint. Very Good condition.
