Frank Godwin Rusty Riley Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-17-57 (King Features, 1957). Frank Godwin's work for the "Rusty Riley" comic strip was done primarily with a brush, and with 40 years of experience behind him, his art overcame the tepid scripts he was given and he populated the panels with lush foliage, recognizable characters, realistic animals and a strong sense of place and time. And he wasn't afraid to use the panel to its fullest. This strip, dated 2-17-57, was completed two years before the strip's cancellation in 1959, and Godwin was at his zenith, producing a page of great class and beauty. The overall page size is 17" x 25" with a 16.5" x 24.5" image area. The work is clean, with some slight signs of aging, particularly in the first panel, which is a photo-stat, but the allure of the page is impressive enough to overlook such minor distractions.
