Alex Ross Marvels #3 Silver Surfer, Galactus, and Fantastic Four Double Splash Pages 36-37 Original Art (Marvel, 1994). The Silver Surfer knifes across the Manhattan skyline at an impossible angle, skimming past Galactus' blasts as the Fantastic Four look on from the very building the world-eater occupies. When
Marvels arrived in 1994, it hit the comics world like a thunderclap. Alex Ross' painted realism was a revelation to both young readers and longtime Merry Marvelites, resetting expectations for how mainstream superhero comics could look -- and feel. The series reframed the Marvel Universe through the eyes of "the man on the street", photojournalist Phil Sheldon, granting readers a grounded perspective on mythic events. Along the way, Ross delivered one iconic image after another, placing viewers in the front row of Marvel history. Issue #3 retold the "Coming of Galactus," capturing the apocalyptic awe of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's landmark
Fantastic Four #48-50 trilogy, a storyline that continues to echo through adaptations, most recently in
The Fantastic Four: First Steps. At this point in the saga, the Silver Surfer had decided his master Galactus was a threat who had to be stopped, prompting Galactus to let the Surfer know he had to fall in line or die. Few images capture the awe, terror, and scale of that moment better than this sweeping double splash by a modern master. Created in gouache over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 23.5" x 17.75", mounted to a board of the same dimensions. Light toning, with some paint flecking on Silver Surfer and blast area, minor rippling/waviness primarily along the edges, marginal staining, and corner/edge handling wear. In Very Good condition.
