A Japan-exclusive for more than 25 years, Mother was finally released internationally in 2015 as EarthBound Beginnings on the Wii U Virtual Console. The game was the brainchild of Japanese copywriter, essayist, and musician Shigesato Itoi, who sought to create a role-playing game set not in a mythical kingdom, but in a quirky, modern-day America as seen through Japanese eyes. Its blend of offbeat humor, emotional storytelling, and satirical take on suburban life set it apart from the medieval fantasy norms of the genre. The predecessor to the beloved Super Nintendo title EarthBound (Mother 2), Mother laid the foundation for the series' distinctive tone and is now highly collectable.
