That scarcity is especially notable when compared to the 49 recorded examples of the earlier "Made in Japan" production variant. The game seamlessly blended Mario's trademark platforming charm with rich RPG storytelling and mechanics. Developed in a collaboration between Nintendo and Square, it featured Mario teaming up with Peach, Bowser, and original characters Mallow and Geno to recover the seven Star Pieces stolen by Smithy, while also introducing an innovative timed-hit combat system that added an action-oriented twist to traditional turn-based battles.
