The Old Mill Concept Drawing by Ferdinand Horvath with Signature (Walt Disney, 1937). The sensational concept drawing featured in this lot was created by the celebrated artist Ferdinand Horvath (1891 - 1973) for the momentous Academy Award®-winning Disney short The Old Mill. Released on November 5, 1937, under the direction of Wilfred Jackson, this cartoon is famous for the advanced animation techniques used to create it, such as realistic animal animation, complex lighting and color effects, weather animation effects, three-dimensional rotation of geometric objects, and, perhaps most notable for being the first to use the revolutionary multi-plane camera. Astoundingly detailed, this concept art shows a stunning low-angle seen from inside the titular mill, created with great detail in graphite and white paint on a 12-field five-peghole animation sheet, signed by Horvath in the bottom right corner. A note comparing the movement of bats to shooting a machine gun through the blades of a propeller can be seen on the bottom edge of the drawing. Pinholes can be seen on the corners of the animation sheet. The lot shows normal age-related toning and overall light handling and edge wear from production. In Good to Very Good condition.
