Strange Tales #110 (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages. We defy you to find any condition issues with this superlative copy of the book in which Doctor Strange made his first appearance. It was in this issue's backup feature, which was written by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko -- a tale that also has the first appearance of the Ancient One. In retrospect it seems an extreme error of omission that Doctor Strange didn't make the cover, but we'll forgive that oversight since Jack Kirby's cover scene features the cult-favorite villain (and certainly one of our favorite Marvel mad-men) Paste-Pot Pete. Pete and the Wizard team up to battle the Human Torch in a story drawn by Dick Ayers. A mystery-type backup feature drawn by Larry Lieber rounds out the book. The only other 9.6 copy of this toughie, to grace one of our sales, was the Pacific Coast copy which we sold last year for a whopping $42,129.73! So don't expect to pick this looker up for a song, but the winner of this beauty will no doubt be singing a happy tune! Overstreet 2013 NM- 9.2 value = $6,500. CGC census 11/13: 4 in 9.6, none higher.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
