Description

Robert Crumb Despair Comics Back Cover Original Art (Print Mint, 1969). Our man R. Crumb brings art off its high horse and to the people, in this righteous back cover page that introduced Crumb's famous saying, "It's only lines on paper, folks!" Not counting the Head Comix and Fritz the Cat oversized books published by Ballentine, Despair was Crumb's seventh solo comic to be published, hitting the head shop stands late in 1969. Any piece of 1960s Crumb art is highly desirable, but to find an iconic back cover image like this is a rare event indeed. The part is in ink and shading film on paper, with an image area of approximately 8.25" x 12". The four pasted-on photo images of people in the lower half of the page are all original; these have become slightly discolored over the years from old adhesives, but overall, the artwork is in Excellent condition. It may just be "lines on paper" but nobody does 'em quite like Robert Crumb!

Crumb, Robert:Robert Crumb was born on August 30, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his four brothers and sisters all produced home-made comics as children. Crumb's fist published work was as an artist for American Greetings cards. In 1967, Crumb moved to San Francisco, where he produced the first issue of Zap Comix, which kickstarted the entire Underground Comix movement. Among his famous creations are Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. He was the subject of Terry Zwigoff's 1994 documentary film, Crumb. Robert Crumb and his wife, cartoonist Aline, currently live in France. . Underground cartoonist
