Description:
John Byrne and Terry Austin X-Men #116 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1978). Deep within the Savage Land, Colossus, Ka-Zar, and Banshee struggle against their bonds, prisoners of the Sun God Garokk, in this stupendous cover creation by the great creative team of John Byrne and Terry Austin. This is only the third cover from the historic run by that legendary duo, and many diehards feel that it was with this storyline that Byrne truly came into his own as a hugely popular fan favorite. Nothing screams "blue chip" in the world of original art collecting like Byrne X-Men, and covers very rarely surface on the market -- this is only the third we've had the pleasure to offer and the first in five years. Heck, there are only sixteen in existence by Byrne/Austin, and it's safe to say that the majority will remain locked away tightly for many years. So try and find a more dramatic and memorable example from one of the true peaks of comic creativity! The art has an image area of 10" x 15" and it includes the original logo and masthead paste-up copy. Some light paper tanning and soiling; otherwise the art is in Very Good condition.

Byrne, John:John Byrne (Canadian-American, b. 1950): broke into comics in 1974. Working mostly for Charlton at first, he soon moved to Marvel, and in 1977 he took over penciling The X-Men, collaborating with writer Chris Claremont and inker Terry Austin, and quickly becoming a fan-favorite as well as one of the highest paid artists in the industry. Among Byrne’s most celebrated stories are his runs as artist on Captain America (1979-80), and writer-artist on the Fantastic Four (1981-86) and Alpha Flight (1983-86), as well as a six-issue run on the Incredible Hulk. In 1986 DC hired Byrne to revamp Superman, but he left the character after only two years due to creative differences. Byrne returned to Marvel, working on the Sensational She-Hulk, Avengers West Coast, and Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Among Byrne’s many later works are the creator-owned John Byrne’s Next Men, as well as more work for DC and Marvel.
