Description
Action Comics #1 (DC, 1938) CGC Apparent VF 8.0 Moderate/Extensive (A-4) Cream to off-white pages. A high-grade copy of the most desirable comic in the hobby, and an issue that most any follower of pop culture will recognize. Who wouldn't want the first appearance of Superman, and who wouldn't be impressed seeing it in your collection?Take a close look at our scan and we think you'll agree that the eye appeal backs up the Very Fine grade. An unrestored copy in this grade would sell for a million dollars or more, so the prospect of paying just a fraction of that for an appealing professionally restored copy such as this one is enticing indeed.
"The most important comic book ever published" was Overstreet's note about this issue some years ago, and no one has seriously disputed that claim in the ensuing years. By universal consensus it's the comic that started the Golden Age. Superman spawned many imitators, and the character's runaway success established DC as one of the top publishers, a status it has never lost. This first Superman story, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Joe Shuster, also briefly tells the origin of the character.
This copy has the distinction of being one of the first two comic books certified by CGC under the company's new restoration scale, which officially began on July 1, 2014. Please note that the A in A-4 noted above is not to be confused with the "A" meaning "amateur restoration" in the scale CGC has been using up to now. In the new scale, A means excellent quality (the best possible grade, with the worst being C) and 4 means "moderate/extensive" quantity (on a scale with 1 being the least amount of restoration and 5 the most).
CGC featured this comic in a press release that also listed the complete grader's notes, which are reproduced in their entirety here:

For those unfamiliar with the term leafcasting, we'll note that this is a method of filling in the missing paper on a cover or page that has missing pieces.
On the label, CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, cover cleaned, reinforced, cover leafcasting, interior leafcasting."
Since the Overstreet value for this issue might well jump by many thousands of dollars in the new edition that will be published after this catalog goes to press, please note that our online lot listing will be updated with the new Guide value within days after the July 23 publication of the book. Overstreet 2013 GD 2.0 value = $120,000; VG 4.0 value = $240,000; FN 6.0 value = $360,000; VF 8.0 value = $870,000. From the Down Under Collection.
