Description:

New Book of Comics #1 (DC, 1937) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. The Overstreet Guide added a NM- price for this issue for the first time this year, and that rocketed the book onto the Guide's list of the 50 most valuable Golden Age comics. Our offering is the proof that a top-grade copy does exist, yet ours remains the only one graded above 8.0 in CGC's census. Though we've got this one in our Golden Age section, it's technically a Platinum Age book, and the fact that the cover bears the copyright "Nicholson Pub. Co." shows how old the book is -- Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson was the founder of DC, but didn't run the company for very long. Overstreet lists this as the first regular-size comic annual, and the second DC annual of any size. The issue has reprinted material from New Comics #1-4 and More Fun Comics #9. The issue's a coveted Gerber "8," and it's dubbed "rare" by Overstreet as well. Considering the age of this book and its rarity, this copy is an absolute wonder, especially since it's a square bound comic! The features inside date from 1935 and 1936 and include Dr. Occult and the Federal Men, both by future Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. There's also artwork by Sheldon Moldoff, Sheldon Mayer, and many other notable names from the earliest days of comics. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $27,000. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.4, none higher.
