Description

Superboy Ashcan #nn (DC, 1942) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages. This historic DC ashcan was used to secure the copyright to the adventures of the young hero in his own title, Superboy. While Superboy #1 did not hit the racks until some seven years later in 1949, DC wanted to make sure a competitor did not steal the rights to the title, and produced this ashcan in 1941. Consequently, this is a significant piece of comic collecting history. Because DC was only interested in securing the copyright to the title, they used whatever cover art and interior was at hand. This cover art is from Detective Comics #57 and the interior is from Action Comics #38. The cover shows Bob Kane at his best with an angry Batman breaking through a glass window, beating up bad guys, and saving a bound and jubilant Robin the Boy Wonder. As ashcans were produced by hand, only a few copies were made, and this is the only known surviving copy of this unique treasure.
