Description
William Randolph Hearst Birthday Book With Original Art By 45 Hearst Strip Artists (King Features Syndicate, 1942). Alex Raymond, Phil Davis, Hal Foster, and George Herriman, and Chic Young are just a few of the all-time greats who drew their birthday wishes to newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in this remarkable volume, prepared by the editors at Hearst's own King Features. All illustrations are in full color.The front of this blue velour-covered volume reads, "The artists of King Features Syndicate Inc. send cordial greetings to William Randolph Hearst on the occasion of his birthday April 29, 1942." Mr. Hearst turned 79 on April 29, 1942.
While the artists mentioned above are the biggest names, the most touching tribute herein is surely that of E. Simms Campbell, one of the first black comic artists, who writes to Hearst:
"You've stood steadfast against the tide
When people took the other side
You've put into practice "The American Way"
A Negro works for your papers every day...
Also providing illustrations here are Nicholas Afonsky, Michael Berry, Ad Carter, Percy Crosby, Elliot Caplin and Jim McArdle, Dudley Fisher, Charles Flanders (Lone Ranger), Jim Gary, William Ritt and Clarence Gray, Syd Hoff, Burris Jenkins, Clyde Lewis, Tom Little, Darrell McClure, George McManus, Otto Messmer, Jimmy Murphy, Feg Murray, Paul Robinson, Cliff Sterrett, George Swanson, Hilda Terry, Russ Westover, Elmer Winner, Bela Zaboly, Gene Ahearn, Carl Anderson, Ruth Carroll, Fanny Cory, Billy DeBeck, Floyd Gottfredson (Mickey Mouse and friends, signed "Walt Disney"), Edwina, Leslie Forgrave, Jimmy Hatlo, Harold Knerr, J. Norman Lynd, C. D. Russell, Otto Soglow, Lee W. Stanley, Jimmy Swinnerton, and Lyman Young.
Not to be overlooked is original verse "The Rhyme Of An Ex-Poet" by the legendary Damon Runyon. Peppered with "insider" references, this text has not been published anywhere as far as we know.
This blue velour volume measures 10" x 12.5", and each illustration is 9" x 6.5". While the art itself is in excellent condition, the pages of the book are detached from the cover and are beginning to separate.
Surely one of the most remarkable comic art items Heritage has offered to date.
