Description

Captain America Comics #1 and 3-10 (And More) Bound Volume With Jack Kirby Original Art (Timely, 1941-42). Gracing the front- and endpapers of this volume are four outstanding Jack Kirby pencil drawings! They feature Steve Rogers; Cap, Bucky, and the Red Skull; Cap and Hitler; and Bucky, respectively. The Cap and Hitler drawing was used as the cover of The Jack Kirby Collector #12.

Each of the drawings has an approximate image area of 6.5" x 9.5". All four drawings are signed. The second drawing on the frontpapers (featuring the Red Skull) is laminated, and says in Jack Kirby's distinctive handwriting, "Property of Rosalind Kirby."

The first frontpaper has the intriguing notation in pen, "Deft Exh C (ID) 11-7-66 JB (Simon)." Could this mean "Defense Exhibit C"? That's pure speculation, but it's intriguing to speculate!

The hardcover volume contains trimmed and bound copies of Captain America Comics #1 and 3-10, as well as a cover proof of #2 and the cover (front and back) of Human Torch #3 (#2). The page quality for all issues except #3 is cream to off-white, and they're supple pages with no edge brittleness. The proof and the Torch cover aside, all comics are complete except for #8 which is missing 18 of the 64 pages. Starting off the book is the key issue #1, the first appearance of Captain America, Bucky, and the Red Skull and one of the most sought-after comics in the hobby. Its front cover is reattached with tape, the outside edge is reinforced with tape, and it has minor amateur color touch. The first page is reinforced with tape. It has cream to off-white pages with no edge brittleness. The cover proof of issue #2 has excellent colors. It's blank on the back. Issue #3 has a name penciled on the front cover. Page quality of this issue is cream, the pages are slightly brittle at the edges, and there's tanning on the inside covers. Issue #5 has a pen checkmark on the back cover. Issue #6 has tape repair to the front cover. The 9th, 10th, and 23rd pages have tape repair, they're either reattached or are married from a different copy. Issue #9 is the sharpest condition-wise, and #10 is a nice, supple copy too, though the back cover is detached (note: in the meantime this back cover has been professionally re-attached). Overstreet 2009 VG 4.0 value (for the complete issues only) = $25,376.

Purchased by the present owner in the 6/17/95 Sotheby's auction, to which it was consigned by the Kirby family.

No comic fan could fail to love seeing art by the King at the peak of his powers, together with key early published work by the Simon and Kirby team! Combine that with the fact that "King" Kirby obviously owned the book at one time, and you've got one of the more fascinating lots in the auction. From the Dr. Mark Miller Collection.
