Green Lantern #76 (DC, 1970) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages. This newly certified copy is the only 9.8 certified to date of what many would call the hottest book in the comic hobby!Not only did this key issue shoot past Incredible Hulk #181 and Giant-Size X-Men #1 this year to become the most valuable non-variant Bronze Age comic in Overstreet's ranking, the summer show season saw high demand for copies of this issue in all grades all around the show floor. While the coming Green Lantern movie was undoubtedly a factor in this, the recent price jump of Showcase #22 no doubt spurred anyone who was priced out of the market on that Green Lantern key to grab this one before prices get even higher.
The issue is significant for many reasons, one of which is that it brought the Green Lantern character into the modern era. Star artist Neal Adams took over as penciler of the title, and Denny O'Neil's stories brought "social conscience" to comics, taking on racism, drug addiction, and other such themes and garnering much publicity at the time. A panel from the issue was even reprinted in the New York Times, who pronounced it "the first of National's [i.e. DC's] relevant books." As such, this is considered by many to be the issue that started the Bronze Age of comics. In addition, Green Arrow gets co-star billing for the first time.
Some collectors might ask: why has only one copy made it to 9.8 despite more than 500 being submitted to CGC to date? To a great extent, the answer lies in the green edges of this issue. The top edge in particular is usually notorious for picking up indentations and blemishes, not so here! We've never seen a copy of #76 with edges as clean and sharp as this one's. Also the sharp outer corners are very pleasing to the eye. The back cover looks fresh, with no dust shadow. Also, if you're new to this book we should point out that what might look like a color break near the crook of the L in Lantern is actually something that occurred in the printing. You can easily compare it to the Pacific Coast copy in our archives as well as many others we've sold to see this break in the black line.
This beautiful book is probably the most desirable Bronze Age book Heritage has offered to date. We'd heard of a 9.6 copy changing hands for $30,500 last year, and we expect this higher-graded specimen to easily eclipse that mark, and to be one of the most hotly contested lots in the auction.
Overstreet 2010 NM- 9.2 value = $2,000. CGC census 10/10: 1 in 9.8, none higher.
