Description
ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN COPIES OF GREEN LANTERN'S DEBUT
All-American Comics #16 Billy Wright pedigree (DC, 1940) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages. The first appearance of Green Lantern is one of the top five comic issues in the hobby! This is a book that's hard to come by in unrestored condition in any grade, and this is one of just two copies that have earned a grade higher than FN 6.0.In fact, inspect this copy closely and you might like it even more than the 8.0 grade would indicate. Foxing in some areas is the only noteworthy defect we can even see -- the book is attached firmly onto the staples and there is no spine split. Nor is there any rust on the staples.
"The" Green Lantern (as he was originally known) became a breakout character. Overstreet noted, "The ancient fable of the magic lamp was transformed into a modern and more accessible, more mysterious form. The Green Lantern's chant became a staple of school boy mythology." Jim Steranko gave some credit for the strip's popularity to the lantern chant as well: "The ceremony of the ring charging its power by the god-like glow of the lantern was almost religious in content."
The character was created by Martin Nodell, and the cover art for the first issue was by Sheldon Moldoff.
Is this the most desirable book in the auction? We leave that decision to the bidders, but while Action #1 and Detective #27 have seen high-profile copies come to auction in recent years, we can't remember the last time a significant copy of this sought-after issue was sold publicly.
Overstreet 2011 VF 8.0 value = $130,000. CGC census 2/12: 1 in 8.0, 1 higher.
