MOST IMPORTANT COMIC BOOK EVER PUBLISHED
Action Comics #1 Billy Wright pedigree (DC, 1938) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Off-white to white pages. "The most important comic book ever published" was Overstreet's note about this issue some years ago, and we've never heard anyone nominate any other comic! Now that the best copies of this book are considered seven-figure items, many are looking for a solid (yet unrestored) lower-grade copy. Not only does this fill that bill, we hasten to add that it's being offered without a reserve. This is the first appearance of Superman, and it's the comic that started the Golden Age. If you browse the rest of the Billy Wright collection in this catalog you'll see the difference between the 1936-37 comics offered and the comics that came later. Superman spawned many imitators (again many of which can be seen on these pages), and the character's runaway success established DC as one of the top publishers, a status it has never lost. This first Superman story, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Joe Shuster, also briefly tells the origin of the character.
Given the price of an Action #1, the key factor is how well the comic presents in the holder. Some of the copies In this grade range that have come on the market have had a defect such as being hole-punched, having a large missing chunk, or being water-stained. No such glaring defect hampers this solid copy. The spine of the book will no doubt be the topic of some discussion, so we'll note that this copy has a 1" spine split at the top and a 3.75" spine split at the bottom. While the latter extends past the bottom staple, note that the back cover is attached to that bottom staple.
That aside, we think you'll agree the copy has more than enough "pluses" to bestow serious bragging rights upon the winning bidder.
Overstreet 2011 GD 2.0 value = $90,000; VG 4.0 value = $180,000. CGC census 2/12: 4 in 3.0, 21 higher.
