Description
Robert Crumb Zap Comics #8 Cover Original Art with Color Separations and Hand-Written Letter (Print Mint, 1975-76). By the mid-1970s, American Underground Comix were at a crossroad. The old sex and drugs taboos had long since been rendered passé by outrageous comic books like Zap, and as a result, the covers began to get pretty strange around this time. There's no better example of that "cosmic strangeness" than this, the cover to Zap #8. Robert Crumb had always excelled at using himself as a comic character, and here he's looking "deep" within himself, searching for answers. Silly boy! It's R. Crumb at his wildest!The art is drawn in ink on sketchbook paper, with an image area of approximately 9" x 12.5"; there has been a slight bit of paper discoloration within the image area from an old framing, but otherwise, it's in Excellent condition. Also included with the cover art is the original letter written by Crumb in 1976, all done in ink in his distinctive hand lettering (which by itself is quite valuable), and also three hand-cut color separations for the cover, done by Crumb with Zipatone adhesive film on vellum overlays. With the current market for Robert Crumb art going higher and higher, not to mention the fact that his original Zap covers are nearly impossible to find (this is the first one Heritage has offered), we expect some spirited bidding on this little masterpiece!
