Bidding Tutorial
  1. Find a lot that you would like to bid on.
You can find lots by browsing or searching our on-line catalog, viewing a printed catalog for certain types of auctions, or getting an auction list faxed or mailed to you. We have a wide variety of auction types to choose from View our Family of Auctions. One of the easiest ways to find the lot you want is to use our free MyWantList™ program, which notifies you the instant the item you are looking for is in stock. If the lot has a photograph, click it for a more detailed view of the lot.

  2. Research to determine what you are willing to pay for the lot.
We provide free information to help you determine a fair price for any given lot. You can search our FREE Permanent Auction Archive for prices realized data (with descriptions and images).

  3. Place a Bid. Your bid is a Secret Maximum Bid. Heritage uses your Secret Maximum Bid to incrementally raise your live bid to beat out the competition. You never pay more than one increment over the next highest bid from other bidders. Follow these steps for bidding:

    1. You only need to bid once.
    2. Bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay for this auction lot. This amount, unseen by other bidders or consignors, will be used by Heritage to bid for you as long as the current bid is lower than your bid.
    3. Bids must be whole dollar amounts. Partial dollar amounts will not be accepted.
    4. Review your bid carefully before submitting it. Make sure that you are willing to pay the price you bid for this lot. If you make a mistake on your bid, you will have only one more chance to correct it before it becomes final.
    5. Take advantage of MyBids and keep track of all your bidding activities with one click of the mouse. MyBids instantly creates an at-a-glance bidding activity page accessible only by you. You can even Batch bid on all lots you are bidding on or tracking with a single click.
    6. A Buyer's Premium is charged in addition to the successful bid. The buyer's premium is an amount equal to fifteen (15%) percent of the successful bid, with a minimum of $6 per lot.
    7. Because bids are received via phone, Email, FAX, regular mail, etc., a tie for the high bid is possible. In the event of a tie for the high bid, the first Internet bidder to place the high bid wins by default.
    8. If you are the successful high bidder when the auction closes, you will receive an e-mail confirmation immediately following the auction followed by an e-mail invoice in the next few days for your winnings.
    9. Terms and conditions differ for each type of sale and are subject to changes. Please review our Terms and Conditions. Your bid means that you accept them and will comply if you are the winning bidder.
    10. Bid increments determine the lowest amount you may bid on a particular lot. All bids must be at least one bidding increment over the current bid. However, these increments only apply to the current bid. Bids greater than one increment over the current bid can be any whole dollar amount. The bid increments are as follows:
  Current Bid Bid Increment
< $99 $1
$100 - $249 $5
$250 - $499 $10
$500 - $999 $25
$1,000 - $2,499 $50
$2,500 - $4,999 $100
$5,000 - $9,999 $250
$10,000 - $24,999 $500
$25,000 - $99,999 $1,000
$100,000 - $249,999 $2,500
$250,000 - $499,999 $5,000
> $500,000 $10,000
