From Norse Mythology: The Valkyries, also named the "Choosers of the Slain," were Odin's fearless, immortal woman warriors who roamed the skies above the battlegrounds. They decided who would win and also gathered the souls of dying warriors deserving of an afterlife in Valhalla. The best known of the Valkyries was Brynhild, who gave up her immortality by saving the life of Agnar, a young hero fated to die.
