Shock Illustrated #3 Gaines File pedigree (EC, 1956) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages.
Only 100 copies of this issue were produced and given out at the EC offices; the rest of the print run was destroyed because publisher William Gaines couldn't afford to have them bound! It features terrific artwork by EC stalwarts Graham Ingels, Reed Crandall, Jack Kamen, and George Evans, with a fabulous cover painting by Rudy Nappi. This is one of the rarest EC books, and the few copies that exist rarely appear on the open market, let alone in condition this good (from Gaines' personal file, no less). Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,350. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.2, 1 higher.

Shock Illustrated #3 (EC, 1956) CGC FN- 5.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Here's the last non-
Mad
EC publication, and one that didn't ever make it to newsstands. A few copies (Overstreet says 100) were bound by hand, and finding one of those is the toughest challenge for the EC completist. Cover artist Rudy Nappi is probably best known for the many Hardy Boys covers he painted for Grosset and Dunlap -- of course, more adult subject matter is dealt with here. The interior art is by EC standbys Reed Crandall, George Evans, Jack Kamen, and Graham Ingels. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $312. CGC census 12/05: 1 in 5.5, 6 higher.

Shock Illustrated #3 (EC, 1956) CGC VG+ 4.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Your EC collection isn't complete without this rarity, and it's a tough one to get your hands on, as this issue never made it to newsstands! This was the very last non-
Mad
EC publication, bearing a May 1956 cover date. After it was printed, publisher Bill Gaines reportedly lacked the funds to have it bound. So the only copies that exist are a few (Overstreet says 100) that were bound by hand. According to the book
Tales of Terror!
, "These were given away at the EC offices, or sent to fans who had ordered the issue." The magazine has a painted cover by Rudi Nappi and art by EC standbys Reed Crandall, George Evans, Jack Kamen, and Graham Ingels. CGC notes, "Centerfold detached." Overstreet 2004 VG 4.0 value = $184.

Shock Illustrated #3 (EC, 1956).
Super-rare EC "Picto-Fiction" (text stories with numerous illustrations); only 100 copies of this issue were produced and given out at the EC offices. The rest of the print run was destroyed because Gaines couldn't afford to have them bound! Terrific artwork by EC stalwarts Graham Ingels, Reed Crandall, Jack Kamen, and George Evans with a fabulous cover painting by Rudy Nappi. This is one of the rarest EC books, and the few copies that exist rarely come on to the open market. This is an excellent copy, a solid FN+. It has a 1/2" split at the top of the spine, moderate spine stress, light creasing (does not break ink) in both the top right and bottom right corners, and has a moderately bumped top left corner. The cover still has outstanding clarity and color. Magazine format. From the Grant Geissman Collection. Overstreet 2001 FN 6.0 value = $268; NM 9.4 value = $850.

Crime Illustrated #1 (EC, 1955) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
With a palette of a mere four colors (yellow, red, black, and white), artist Joe Orlando's cover is simple yet incredibly effective. This "picto-fiction" magazine entry from EC showcases the art of Reed Crandall, George Evans, and Graham Ingels. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $150.

An evocative, fully painted cover by Rudy Nappi seduces the reader into interior tales illustrated by Al Williamson (redrawn from

Shock Illustrated #1 Gaines File pedigree 3/12 (EC, 1955) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
"The psychology of a suburban switch party" is the featured story here... that's another way of saying it's about swinging, baby! And if the wife-swapping isn't enough for you, there's drug abuse and prostitution in these degenerate pages as well. This was EC's first "picto-fiction" magazine, and it was drawn in its entirety by Jack Kamen. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $190. CGC census 3/06: 4 in 9.4, 1 higher.

Shock Illustrated #2 (EC, 1956) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
This was one of the last non-
Mad
EC publications, and while a #3 was printed, #2 was the last issue of this title to actually make it to newsstands. The cover's by Rudi Nappi, and if you only know that artist from his classic "Hardy Boys" book covers, see how he handles darker material here (the scrawl on the mirror reads "Help me. Stop me. Don't let me do this again!"). The issue's interior art is by Reed Crandall, Al Williamson (with an Angelo Torres assist), Graham Ingels, and George Evans. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $190. CGC census 3/05: 1 in 9.4, 4 higher.

Crime Illustrated #1 Gaines File Copy pedigree (EC, 1955) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
This "picto-fiction" magazine represented an attempt by EC to regain their footing in the post-Code marketplace, and showcases the art of Reed Crandall, George Evans, and Graham Ingels, with a beautifully lurid cover by Joe Orlando. Writer Al Feldstein is credited as "Alfred E. Neuman." Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $175. CGC census 7/05: 4 in 9.4, 2 higher.

EC's first "picto-fiction" magazine,
Shock Illustrated
was the publisher's attempt to skew its content toward an older audience -- and with subject matter like drug addiction, wife swapping, and prostitution, we say, "Mission accomplished, EC!" Jack Kamen provides a tri-color wash-tone cover. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $100.
