Heritage Offers a Lulu of a Find!
DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Comics Auctions (HCA) will offer the original art to the first appearance of Marjorie Henderson Buell's iconic child character, Little Lulu, in their upcoming Signature Auction, to be held August 12-13, 2005, in Dallas, Texas.
"It's rare that the first appearance of a major character comes to market," said Don Mangus, Cataloger for HCA, "and I'm excited that we're able to offer this historic piece. Virtually everyone in the world is familiar with Marge's pint-sized scamp, Little Lulu, whether from her Saturday Evening Post comics, her wildly popular cartoons, her stint as spokesperson for Kleenex® tissues, or the HBO shorts voiced by Tracey Ullman in 1995. Lulu has made several generations of both kids and adults laugh, and that's something to be enormously proud of."
"Originally created as the Post's replacement for Carl Anderson's Henry, Little Lulu was an instant hit," said Mangus. "With her 'naturally curly hair' and her irrepressible personality (reportedly based on Marge's own rascally childhood), Lulu charmed readers from her very first appearance. She starred in more than 20 cartoons from Famous Studios during the 1940s, cartoons that are still seen and enjoyed by young and old alike. In fact, Lulu was so popular that Famous, in an effort to capitalize on her popularity without paying royalities, created their own funny girl character?and so Little Audrey was born."
"We're incredibly proud to offer the original art from Little Lulu's first appearance in 1935," Mangus continued. "This spectacular treasure comes from the Random House Archives, and is a piece worthy of the finest museum-quality collections. Measuring approximately 6.5" x 7" overall and in excellent condition, this is truly a piece of American cartoon history. I can't remember when a comparable piece has been offered, making this a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
This piece of art carries a pre-auction estimate of $10,000.
