Description:
Margaret "Gare" Barks - Landscape Painting Original Art (undated). Born in Hilo, Hawaii, Margaret "Gare" Barks became primarily a commercial artist, but painted about six landscapes a year until the late 1960s when she turned to her landscape subjects full-time. Her subjects include the California redwoods, Sequoia National Park, the Northwest coast, and landscapes in Texas, New Mexico, Montana and Alaska. Gare attended the Punahou Academy in Honolulu and worked as a draftsperson in her father's architecture firm. She also studied with California painter Millard Sheets during a summer at the University of Hawaii. From 1937 to 1941, Gare attended the Vesper George School of Art and the School of Fine Arts, in Boston, and studied portraiture. She returned briefly to Hawaii, but during World War II moved to southern California, and then to the Berkeley area. Gare became an assistant to Carl Barks, who was writing and drawing the Disney duck comics. Carl and Gare married in 1954, and Gare worked with Carl until his retirement in 1966, and then turned full time to her fine art painting. In 1983, the Barkses moved to Grants Pass, Oregon. Gare died on March 10, 1993. The image area measures 13" x 10", and the art is in Excellent condition.
