Description:
Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip #112 Original Art dated 4-2-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). Here's an incredibly rare Sunday from the thirties. In episode #112, the first installment of "The Cave of Time" story arc, Hal Foster spotlights a day in the life of Prince Valiant and his kingdom. Often referred to as "The Peace Page", this magnificent piece is really nine stand-alone paintings. It's more than a "Day In the Life Of..." - it depicts nine phases or cycles of a lifetime. This exemplary Sunday, perhaps the finest of its type and definitely the greatest we've ever offered at Heritage, is filled with spectacular vistas, along with exceptional interior and costume detailing. War, peace, governing, physical training, relaxation, romance, and reflection - the life of a prince packed into nine panels! A sterling example of Foster's artistic prowess, this Sunday contains all the elements of the strip's narrative in a single example. Framed and matted, with an image area of 26" x 34", the work is in Excellent condition. From The Art of the Funnies Collection.

Foster, Hal:Hal Foster (Canadian-American, 1892-1982): is regarded as the father of illustrational action-adventure cartooning. Originally trained as an illustrator, Foster broke into the comic strip field on January 7, 1929 with his landmark work on the Tarzan feature. In 1936, Foster created his own epic feature, Prince Valiant, and wrote and drew the saga until the May 16, 1971 Sunday. All told, Foster drew an estimated 1,764 Prince Valiant episodes, each a magnificent example of comic strip art. After handing over the finished art chores to John Cullen Murphy, Foster still continued to write, create layouts, and color the strip for nine more years. On February 10, 1980, the last Prince Valiant strip written by Foster saw print, and it was an end of an era. Foster's work has inspired countless cartoonists including Jack Kirby, Lou Fine, Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Joe Kubert, Russ Manning, and many others.
