Description:
Watch our video about this lot! Playboy #1 Red Star Copy (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. As Playboy aficionados know, the "Red Star" copy of the first issue is much rarer than the regular newsstand copy and possibly even rarer than the "Page 3" copy. This seems to be corroborated by data from CGC; namely, that of the 93 copies of Playboy #1 certified to date, just eight were "Red Star" copies. And only one of those eight has earned this lofty of a grade! This is just the third "Red Star" copy (so named because of the star appearing to the left of the "P" in "Playboy") of the issue we've offered in any grade. It's also just the second Near Mint 9.4 we've offered in any variation, with the previous one (a newsstand edition) selling for $31,000 earlier this year. If you have owned a raw copy of this issue or even held one before, you know how easily smudgeable the white cover can be, and understand why it's so tough to find this in Near Mint. The Marilyn Monroe cover is just one part of the appeal of the issue that launched Hugh Hefner's pop culture phenomenon. CGC census 10/12 (for Red Star copies): 1 in 9.4, none higher.
