Description:
E. C. Segar Popeye Thimble Theater "Boxing" Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-1-35 (King Features, 1935). With both Popeye and Swee'pea in the ring, boxer "Jack the Zipper" doesn't stand a chance! What a fight! And what a wild and wonderful example of this beloved comic strip, one of the finest Sundays by Segar that Heritage has had the privilege to offer. This rollicking strip was created during the height of America's fascination with boxing, in particular, the career of World Heavyweight Champion Max Baer. On June 13, 1935, Baer lost his title in a stunning upset to "The Cinderella Man" James Braddock, an event that helped define Boxing's Golden Age, and was an obvious inspiration for this particular Sunday.
The art has quite a pedigree -- it was once part of the Bruce Hamilton collection, and was featured in Bill Blackbeard's classic book, 100 Years of Comic Strips. Add to that a co-starring role from Wimpy, and the fact that Swee'pea was rarely featured in a Segar Sunday, and you have a real winner on your hands! The art has an image area of approximately 20.5" x 21.5", and has been professionally matted and framed to an overall 26.25" x 28.25". There is some minor paper tanning and a few small stains here and there, but the general condition is Very Good.
One more thing to mention to all you Robert Crumb fans out there -- notice the way Segar depicts the audience as a group of heads, all looking in the same direction, usually with just the upper part of the head showing? Check out the cover to R. Crumb's first issue of Zap Comix, in particular the heads popping out of the sewer hole in the street! Could this very strip have been an inspiration for the wildest cartoonist since Segar?
