Description:
Captain America Comics #2 Billy Wright pedigree (Timely, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages. One of Overstreet's top 100 books, this is the second appearance of Captain America, but the first appearance of the Cap costume most are familiar with, including his trademark, the round shield.
The classic cover is by the great Joe Simon, who just passed away a few weeks ago. As with issue #1, Adolf Hitler himself was the featured cover villain, though this was before the United States had entered World War II. As Simon noted in his autobiography, Cap "was the first major comic book hero to take a political stand... as for capturing the attention of the comic book-reading public, it was natural that the adventures of our new red, white, and blue hero would have the advantage over the others who were still challenging the mad scientists or the hoodlums robbing the corner candy store."
The red block at the top of the comic looks immaculate here, and this might rank with the Marvel Comics #1 as the most exciting book of the auction for the Timely fan.
Overstreet 2011 NM- 9.2 value = $38,000. CGC census 2/12: 2 in 9.4, none higher.
