Description:
SUPERB COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE COMICS OF ALL
Batman #1 Billy Wright pedigree (DC, 1940) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages. Unrestored, high-grade copies of major Golden Age keys top everyone's wantlists, and this is a major key by anyone's definition. Just five comics have higher Guide values (four of which are offered in this same auction), yet we wonder if "top of Guide" for this book should actually be higher!
Despite offering more than 50 copies of this book over the years, this is just the second unrestored copy we've had that was certified "white pages."
The issue has the first appearances of both the Joker and Catwoman, who of course are among the very few comic book villains to have attained true "household name" status. Also of note is a classic (and much-imitated) cover by Bob Kane and the late Jerry Robinson. Overstreet 2011 VF 8.0 value = $100,000; VF/NM 9.0 value = $192,500. CGC census 2/12: 3 in 8.5, 3 higher.
