Description:
John Severin and Harvey Kurtzman Frontline Combat #6 Complete 6-page Story "Ace" Original Art (EC, 1952). The war stories Harvey Kurtzman wrote for the EC comic books were like no other before him. Kurtzman always cut to the quick, reminding readers that war meant brutal, painful death, and with the help of one of his favorite artists, he drives that point home in this WWI tale of a young pilot's quest to shoot down enough German planes to be called an "Ace". In Russ Cochran's 1982 reprint of the complete Frontline Combat series, he quotes Kurtzman as as saying this "was John Severin at his best... he knew airplanes and he knew movement." We here at Heritage agree with that assessment -- Severin's work on this six-pager ranks with the best of his EC output. The art is clean and graceful, aided by Kurtzman's layouts and the dynamic lettering of Ben Oda. The pages are drawn on generic blue-lined comic bristol boards, with image areas averaging 13" x 18", and other than some minor soiling along the border edges, remain in Excellent condition.
