Description:
Johnny Craig Vault of Horror #27 "Strictly From Hunger" Cover Original Art (EC, 1952). With his heart-stopping ability to create quickly mounting terror, Johnny Craig was tapped by Bill Gaines to create every cover of Vault of Horror from its start through the end of its run nearly five years later. In this particularly gruesome cover scene by Craig, a flesh-eating blob consumes a tasty morsel -- run for your lives. "He did some of our best covers," Gaines recalled. "Including the infamous severed head cover, which may be the most famous cover ever in comics, and certainly the only one ever to be the focus of an inquiry before the United States Senate." A slow, meticulous craftsman, in a career that spanned four decades, that Craig's relatively small body of work has been influential and well-remembered is testimony to his skill. The image area of this horrific masterpiece measures 13" x 18.5", and it has been framed to an overall size of 16.35" x 23.75". The art is in Excellent condition.

Craig, Johnny:Johnny Craig (American, 1926-2001): started his comics career as an art assistant to Shelly Mayer at DC, and later broke in at EC in 1947, working on their crime and Western stories. Craig really came into his own as a triple-threat talent, as an editor-writer-artist for EC's trendsetting horror and crime stories, most notably in the titles the Vault of Horror and Crime SuspenStories. Craig drew the over-the-top Crime SuspenStories #22, the most infamous crime comic cover examined by the outraged Senate committee that helped drive EC out of the comic books and into Mad magazine. After his time at EC, Craig penciled and inked stories for Atlas, ACG, DC, Marvel, and Warren. In the later years of his career EC fans sought Craig out, and for them, he produced a series of meticulous painted commissions based on the EC horror hosts.
