Description:
Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge Painting Original Art (Walt Disney, 1971). We here at Heritage have been fortunate enough to have handled many of Carl Barks' masterful paintings of the Disney Duck characters he helped make so famous through his many years of writing and drawing comic book stories. Here's a little item that may top them all, and it has quite a story to go with it.

In 1971, a retired Carl Barks was approached by a fan to do a painting of Donald Duck. Barks had been spending his newly-free time doing landscapes and still lifes, but the idea of returning to his Duck friends appealed to him, so he got in touch with his old colleague, George Sherman. Mr. Sherman was for many years a story editor and manager for the line of Disney comics produced by Western Publishing, and remembered fondly the high quality of work Carl did on the comics. Sherman personally dealt with the brass at Disney, and got special permission for him to paint and sell Donald, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Uncle Scrooge. In appreciation, Carl gave Sherman one of his first paintings, a 5" x 7" oil on masonite portrait of the World's Richest Duck, clutching to a bag filled with money. This is that very same painting, and it comes directly from George Sherman's daughter, who has held onto it for all these years.

The small painting is in the original ornate frame as presented by Barks to the Sherman family, and the total measurement is 8.5" x 10.5". The overall condition is Excellent, save for a tiny contact mark to the left of Scrooge's face, about 3/4" away from Scrooge's facial feathers. It's a beautiful little masterpiece that has never entered the market before, and one that any fan of Carl Barks would cherish.

By the way, this is being offered at no reserve!

Barks, Carl:Carl Barks (American, 1901-2000): For the Disney Duck-loving world, it was Carl Barks who exploited the globe-trotting adventures of the Disney Ducks to their fullest, with nearly 500 stories to his credit. His colorful cast of creations includes Scrooge McDuck, Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose , the Junior Woodchucks, the Beagle Boys, Magica De Spell, and Flintheart Glomgold. After Barks eased into his retirement from his heavy workload at Western Publishing, he supplemented his income with oil paintings sold at local art shows. Early subjects included humorous scenes of life on the farm and portraits of Native American princesses. After a few comic book fan/detectives discovered that Barks was the "Good Duck Artist," they commissioned Disney Duck scenes based on Barks' most memorable stories. The popularity and value of these paintings has grown enormously ever since. In 2000, the beloved "Good Duck Artist" died at age 99, only a few months shy of his 100th birthday..
